Dr. Smith’s research background includes concentrations in international economics, economic development, and applied econometrics.  Smith’s research interests focus on topics of international trade and economic policy, and science and technology policy with an emphasis on international dimensions of intellectual property rights.  Smith’s most recent research addresses policy issues at the intersection of international trade, patent rights, and genetically modified organisms.

Dr. Smith earned a B.A. in Political Science at the University of Vermont, a M.A. in Economics at Tufts University, and a Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.  Smith has been on the faculty of the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota since 1998.
