Dr. Smith’s research background includes concentrations in international economics, economic development, and applied econometrics.  Smith’s research publications focus on topics of international trade, and science and technology policy, with an emphasis on international dimensions of intellectual property rights.  Smith’s most recent research addresses policy issues related to international trade and intellectual property protections of genetically modified crops (GMOs).

Dr. Smith’s teaching includes courses in international trade at the graduate (Ph.D. and M.S.) and undergraduate (B.S.) levels.  Smith’s teaching also includes courses on Macroeconomics and Science and Technology Policy at the graduate and undergraduate levels.  Smith has taught at the university level since 1992.

Dr. Smith’s education includes a B.A. in Political Science at the University of Vermont, a M.A. in Economics at Tufts University, and a Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Smith has been on the faculty of the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota since 1998.
